Learning addition

So we have been teaching Ella how to add and subtract lately but we hit a small road block. It just reminds me how literal little kids think. When I ask her what 1 + 1 is she says.."eleven (11)" or 1 + 2..."twelve (12) and 1 + 3..."thirteen (13)". I can see her line of reasoning!!
